Ready to Roll!

I have never been to Roller Derby, but something tells me it would be fun...this is as close as I've gotten...

Wheels_on_fire

New embroidered dish towel from Sublime, most likely a wedding gift for a couple of crazy pals.

Roller_derby_girls_2

The blank towel was purchased at Sublime, and I have to say, really nice to work with.

It seems as though the craft to do list keeps getting longer and longer and the weekend shorter and shorter. Off to work on the Napkin of the Month installment...hmmm, what holiday is coming up...?

House Sewing

Our old hamper was a Target special and has seen better days...

Old_hamper1_2

Many Sundays, of many loads of dirty clothes have pulled the poor thing apart...Old_hamper2

But with several yards of canvas, a heavy duty needle, and the measuring skills of my construction guru of a husband, the new and improved laundry hamper is born!

New_hamper

Color coded panels divide clothes into whites, colors, and darks...I'm so excited, I think I'll start a load of laundry!

Valentine's Day Love

February edition of the Napkin of the Month Club

Valentines_day_napkins

I used this pattern from Last Minute Patchwork Gifts featured in Martha. Small problem...no matter how I tried, I could not figure out how come my rick rac looks so different; good thing The Mom likes rick rack! I have the book on order and I'm hoping it has a better picture of the directions, but if anyone has already made them, I'd love your feedback!

4 hours to sew, 6 weeks to finish...

It took only an afternoon; a fun filled, relaxing crafting afternoon, to stich up the new Betty Shopper from design maven Amy Butler...

Betty_shopper_on_the_go

and 6 weeks to finish the damn thing! Why you ask? Because the handles require a large grommet not sold in the local fabric store.  An online shopping spree commenced and when the grommet tool arrived and was put to use, it wouldn't grommet! ...or what ever you call it when you whack the metal thingy with a hammer and the little teeth fold down. After much discussion with The Husband, a man who knows his way around tools, it was decided I either don't have enough fabric or the tool is deformed. Easy enough to fix by getting a piece of scrap wood and drilling a hole the same size as the tool, which, I was told, would allow the tool to drop down when whacked.

6 weeks pass by in which we have no scrap wood...

Betty_shopper

On day 42, we venture to Home Despot for light bulbs....do you know scrap wood is FREE at Home Despot? Hole is drilled, grommet tool is whacked X 4 and I have a new gym bag....

My new obsession

Ever since these, I've been obsessed with sewing fabric on paper.  I've made several more cards, but alas, since I've worked the last 2 weekends, no sunlight left for pictures...

With my first 2 days off, in a row, since January 13th, I got crackin' on the craftin'...

Dont_worry_be_happy_card_2

I made this for a friend who is working a temp job for 8 months; 1 month into it and she's already worrying about her next job. This is a "Don't worry, be happy, get out of jail free card" It entitles the bearer 5 worry free months with an expiration on June 15th. Only then can she worry.

Worry happens to be a topic that comes up frequently during our walks; it's a hard thing to let go. Sometimes I wonder if I use it to make me feel productive in situations I have not control over...

Continuing on with my new obsession...

Orange_notebook

A plain paper notebook. I'm still refining this; the fabric is sewn onto card stock, which is still a bit loose for the back of a notebook.

2008_calendar

2008 Calendar, Address Book, and Journal. This is number 2. I had one ready for January and then fabric met paper and it was all over for version 1.

2008_workout_log

2008 Workout Log. Who wouldn't want to keep track of fitness with a book like this? In this and the previous picture, the dark, what looks like black,  fabric is actually eggplant. The patchwork pieces in the Workout Log are from the Amy Butler Patchwork bag I made for a Mitten Swap over a year ago...that's the great thing about a scrap box, everything gets re-purposed eventually...

So, now the Craft Lab looks like this...

Craft_room_disaster

and believe it or not, someone will be sleeping on the bed...yes, look closely, behind the ironing board... tomorrow night.

Let the piling begin...

On the needles again...

New_yarn_for_scarf

This yarn reminds me of the forest; greens and dusty browns with a touch of velvety mauve. Soon to be this scarf.

Less worrying....more doing....

Lots of new outlooks for the new year...my new thought for 2008 is to worry less about obtaining, gathering, buying, searching and researching a project and just get in there and do. I'm going to take a page from Colleen's book and be more fearless with my craft this year...

Fabric_cards

Fabric cards inspired by DSQ. These turned out really nice; I'm quite pleased I didn't let myself worry if I was doing it right, I just did it.

Insides

The insides are as cool as the outsides.

My new mantra for 2008?  Just wing it....

New Year Tradition

Time_flies

2008 is the perfect time for a new tradition; New Year's cards. Do you know the ultimate card store doesn't have such a card?...but they do have all the fixin's to make your own...

Crane_cards

I love black and white; crisp, clean, sharply defined. Just the way a new year feels, or the way a brand new desk calender looks.

Cards_on_the_mantel_2

Cranes, along with herons, are one of my favorite birds. In Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese lore they are auspicious birds; symbols of long life and wisdom. Folding 1,000 paper cranes will bring the gift of peace and health.

What better way to start the new year then sending friends and loved ones a handmade card full of long life, wisdom, health, and peace?

One last gifty...

One last post about my holiday craftiness before the year ends....

Over the last year Colleen has inspired me to reach for the embroidery needle, and with the help of Sublime Stitching, I have unleashed the inner stitcher!

It's been either grey, snowing, raining, or, well, grey before I sent these off, so I apologize for the pictures. I have several more towels to finish for gifts, plus one for me, so I shall endeavor to get better photos next go!
